When Deans, the Reverend Peter Delaney, and a few others returned from the cemetery, they went directly to Liza’s East Side apartment where Kay Thompson had prepared food, drink, and a few appropriate wisecracks hopefully to cheer up the morose gathering. Than, after bewildered Joey Luft, Judy’s third and last-born, had been put to bed, the group decided to visit a mutual acquaintance in New Jersey. During the glum car ride to Jersey, they happened to turn on the radio and one music station was broadcasting Judy’s Carnegie Hall conecert. Judy’s strong voice could be heard singingThe Man That Got Away.

It was Liza, according to Deans in his bookWeep No More, My Lady, who begged them to ‘leave it on’. The car passengers listened in silence, and then suddenly, it was Liza who shouted out,

“Go, Mama, go!”
